FLAG RETIREMENT

June 14th, Flag Day, and November 11th, Veterans Day the annual Flag Retirement Ceremony took place at Fort Independence at Castle Island. It’s open to the public and admission is free. This is a formal ceremony which will demonstrate the proper way to dispose of or ‘retire’ the Flag of the United States of America – Old Glory/ The Stars and Stripes.

Most know that when disposing of an old, faded or ripped and shredded flag Americans do not simply throw them away. They are incinerated the proper way. Any member of the public who is in possession of a flag that should be disposed of is invited to bring it to the Fort during open ours or dropped off at Sullivan's to be retired with other flags during the next ceremony.
